I am pleased to announce ‘Being and Doing’ (1984) a film by Stuart Brisley in collaboration with Ken McMullen will be exhibited at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, as part of the exhibition entitled The Cynics Republic (La République (cynique)), a score by Pierre Bal-Blanc. Coordinator: Coline Davenne.
The Cynics Republic presents a counter-narrative of performance art, tracing its origins to Ancient Cynicism. Designed as a living score, the exhibition evolves daily, using dematerialized resources like scores and sound pieces from the CNAP (Paris) and Kontakt (Vienna) collections engaging visitors dynamically.
The exhibition ‘The Cynics Republic’ offers a counter-narrative of the history of performance. It looks at the emergence of ‘performative practice’ from Antiquity onwards and seeks to recover the relevance of the values of ancient cynicism – truth, self-sufficiency, endurance, sobriety and free sexuality – in the context of today’s social and ecological challenges. ‘The Cynics Republic’ offers visitors the chance to experience an exhibition constructed as a score and that will be renewed on a daily basis over the course of three weeks thanks to the use of dematerialized resources (scores, protocols, films and sound pieces) from the national collections of the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) and the Kontakt collection in Vienna. ‘The Cynics Republic’ proposes to approach the resources of these collections from the perspective of a repertoire of immemorial gestures. Works will be activated on a daily basis by artists and performers, with the selection updated according to a weekly theme: dishonour (a critical alternative to competitiveness), shamelessness (an anticipation of a state of nature) and finally destitution (an ethic of animality).

This year, the Arteria festival is themed divino, a title that merges the meanings of the divine (a nod to Dante’s The Divine Comedy and the drag queen Divine) and “vino” (wine in Croatian/Italian). In the Istrian region, wine has been integral to life, culture, and diet since ancient times. Over the centuries, wine has served as a visual symbol of taste, class, courtship, and divinity.
Our Lapidarium collection includes a limestone fragment adorned with grape motifs from the 4th-5th century, symbolizing the union of believers with Christ, as depicted in John 15:1-6. The vine thus becomes an emblem of divine love, sacrifice, and the mystical unity of the Christian community. The use of vine imagery also reflects the agrarian society of the time, where grape cultivation was a familiar part of life, linking the divine to everyday existence
This multi-layered theme promotes the ethical and aesthetic regenerative development of our ongoing relationship with the ‘culture of wine’. It raises questions: How can this cultural capital be shared with contemporary artists and their diverse practices? How can we address social and environmental issues? How might we restore natural habitats through artistic collaboration, or simply explore design solutions that celebrate the beauty and heritage of vine culture?
Curated by Jerica Ziherl, with guest curator Sabina Oroshi. The Museum Lapidarium will act as an open studio for the public.

Being There, features four recently acquired Thomas Gainsborough portraits. The exhibition is the first in The Gallery at No.1 Royal Crescent’s ambitious new programme of contemporary art exhibitions.
The four Gainsborough paintings will be presented as key components of a kaleidoscopic group exhibition of portraiture featuring 18 contemporary British artists selected by guest curator Ingrid Swenson MBE. The title for the exhibition, Being There is intended to invite visitors to reflect on the experience of artists and their sitters or subject in the act of making the artwork, and to consider what similarities and differences there may be for the role of the artist in Gainsborough’s time and today. Artists in Being There are Michael Armitage, Frank Auerbach, Sarah Ball, Richard Billingham, Glenn Brown, Brian Dawn Chalkley, Kaye Donachie, Paul Graham, Maggi Hambling, David Hockney, Claudette Johnson, Chantal Joffe, Lucy Jones, Joy Labinjo, Melanie Manchot, Celia Paul, Gillian Wearing, Shaqúelle Whyte.

The ‘unscripted’ Artist Residencies Selected by Frances Morris
Hauser & Wirth Somerset
Taking place in parallel with Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s exhibition, ‘Phyllida Barlow. unscripted’, this summer residency will welcome guest artists Jack Killick, Jess Flood-Paddock, Young In Hong and Hamish Pearch, to spend time living and working in Somerset. Selected by curator Frances Morris, and in the spirit of Phyllida Barlow, the artists will be invited to seek inspiration from the exhibition, landscape and architecture of Somerset, as well as conversations that develop between the group.
As with most Hauser & Wirth residencies, there is no prescribed outcome. Creative responses may take shape individually, or as a collective, resulting in an open studio session for the local community to engage and interact with their practice.

Stuart Brisley is a pioneering multi-media and performance artist who developed performance art as a form of social action in the 1960s and 1970s. This book assesses his seminal influence on British art through a focus on his lifelong engagement with the histories and imaginaries of revolution.

COZZIE LIVS is a group exhibition holding a nightlight to the absurd activity of contemporary commentary. It is important to note how much weight the contemporary landscape bares, and how the assimilation of such environments can renew, distort, and interrupt our readings and feelings towards our immediate surroundings. As the world becomes more digitalised, abstract, polarised, immaterial so does our reading of it. It is through this generation of absurd gesturing of our current environment into meta systems that the impetus to hold an exhibition of relief work was born.

The exhibition showcases prints and drawings acquired by the Museum over the past five years, including State Occasion from The Museum of Ordure by Stuart Brisley acquired in 2020. The works range from an early 17th-century study for a fresco by the Flemish artist Paul Bril to digital prints from 2019 by the Apsáalooke (Crow) artist Wendy Red Star, who examines the intersections of her indigenous heritage with colonialist structures and institutions.

The Wolf Man's dream is one of the most famous dreams in the history of psychoanalysis. It was the harrowing childhood nightmare of Sergei Pankejeff (1886-1979), who was one of Freud’s patients and later became better known as the ‘Wolf Man’. He made a sketch of the dream for Freud, and in later life produced several paintings of it, Pankejeff’s dream is the backdrop to Dawn Chalkley’s new etching titled Wolfmen taking a break from Freud (2023).
Brian Dawn Chalkley reimagines the dream set against a visceral landscape embellished with androgynous figures, feral animals and frocks. Autobiographical references to the artist’s childhood holidays, the people they encounter and Dawn (their trans alter ego) can be read in tandem with questions about décor and decorum, class and taste, and the status of the artist versus that of the amateur artisan.
Only when we are up close do we start to absorb narratives that allude to the stuff of nightmares. The image is laden with clues but interpretation is slippery and as elusive as the moment between waking and sleeping. While they hint at potential happenings these new pictures reveal no certainty of anything at all.

I Extend My Arms, Cahun and Response

ArtHouse Jersey is currently hosting artist Karl Murphy for a work-in-progress art project inspired by the enduring legacy of work left behind by Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore in Jersey.
Within the context of their relationship to the Island, Karl Murphy is collaborating on I Extend My Arms, Cahun and Response alongside queer artists Lewis G Burton, Dr Adam Perchard, Yasmine Akim and Jack Killick.
During the residency the artists hope to engage and uncover Cahun’s thinking and reactivate their relationship to the Island to re-ignite Jersey as a channel for creative reflection. Murphy said “If Cahun’s work was situated in response, we ask how then can we reenact or reimagine this mode of response. To connect with the ancient and heartbeat of that monolithic rock. To say thank you, to stage sanctuary and consideration. To limit ourselves to that Island as Claude did. To use and inhabit the Island as Claude did.”
Karl Murphy would like to extend the invitation to other members of the public who might like to join the artists to consider these themes during the residency at Greve de Lecq Barracks. Anyone interested in connecting with Karl and collaborators this week or next can email [email protected] in the first instance.
The residency will then culminate in a showcase on Friday 24 February at 7pm to share the outcomes of these explorations to the public. Anyone wishing to attend the event can reserve a place for free via ArtHouse Jersey’s Eventbrite.

Brian Dawn Chalkley Announced as Recipient of 2022 David and Yuko Juda Art Foundation Grant
Brian Dawn Chalkley has this evening been announced as the recipient of the 2022 David and Yuko Juda Art Foundation Grant. The grant gives £50,000 to an artist to help alleviate some of their financial pressures and give them freedom to concentrate on their practice. The announcement was made at 7pm on Wednesday 14 September 2022 at Annely Juda Fine Art in London.
The deciding panel for this year’s grant was made up of the Foundation’s trustees, David and Yuko Juda, Nina Fellmann, Rupert Faulkner and Paul Calkin, joined by Andrea Rose (Former Director of Visual Arts, British Council), Reinhard Spieler (Director of the Sprengel Museum, Hannover) and Jonathan Watkins (former Director of IKON, Birmingham).
David and Yuko Juda said, “This year choosing was incredibly difficult - all eight could have been awarded the grant. However, we felt that Brian Dawn Chalkley's work stood out as somehow quite different and was a revelation to us all.”

Nominated for the David and Yuko Juda Art Foundation Grant for 2022
We are very excited to announce that Brian Dawn Chalkley is one of eight nominated artists for the David and Yuko Juda Art Foundation Grant for 2022. This award of £50,000 was set up in 2017 and the four grantees to date have been Amikam Toren (2021), a special extra grant of £10,000 went to Rie Nakajima (2021), Zineb Sedira (2019) and Kathy Prendergast (2018).
This year’s curators of the Grant are Andrew Wilson and Ingrid Swenson, and the final Grant awardee will be selected by the Trustees of the Foundation with three external advisers.
The Grant Ceremony will be held on 14 September 2022 at Annely Juda Fine Art, 23 Dering Street, London W1S 1AW.

Where There's Space to Grow is the third and final exhibition in a series curated by young people across the Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme. Firstsite, Colchester presented House Share curated by Young Art Kommunity (YAK) from June to September 2021, and Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange will open their exhibition, SEEN co-curated by young LGBTQIA+ people from Cornwall, in October 2021 until January 2022. The exhibitions aim to bring young people together from across the country, connecting them with each other and with the Arts Council Collection.

The Israel Museum, Jerusalem acquires work by William Mackrell
The Israel Museum, Jerusalem acquires Peak (2018) by William Mackrell from the recent exhibition Bodyscapes curated by Dr. Adina Kamien at the museum.
Bodyscapes studied the concept of embodiment and the corpus as an organizing structure. Examining the relationship between nature and culture through the prism of the body, this exhibition brings together historical sources and artworks ranging from prehistory to contemporary art in a variety of media: works on paper, photographs, sculpture, paintings, video works, and installations. Artists including Tracy Emin, Jenny Saville, Micha Ullman, Maya Zack, Karam Natour, Sigalit Landau, and Ori Reisman explore questions of proportion, the relationship between human beings and nature, and corporeal and mental boundaries in order to make personal, social, and political statements.

Curated by Alessandro Vincentelli, the exhibition presents the collected visions of more than 30 international and Slovenian artists, including a new work titled Harley Kuyck-Cohen. The exhibition is dedicated to the central theme of the letter on the premises of the former MTT factory in Melje. In the face of the uncertainties created by the global pandemic, and in the new and enhanced need to recognise signs and learn from history, the EKO 8 Triennial is designed to be a barometer of change.

The British Museum acquires State Occasion from The Museum of Ordure (2020) by Stuart Brisley from his recent exhibition Recent Paintings from the Museum of Ordure at the gallery in October 2020.
Brisley writes in his statement that accompanies the exhibition 'In the second painting and drawing she is similarly caught but this time in an 18th Century carriage taking her to and from the Houses of Parliament with the calculation of exposure.
In these images colours have been altered by using the cheap reproduction process of photocopying. By copying and altering the newspaper print the image is further veiled revealing the technical process thus distancing its relationship to the original source which had previously gone through another transcription in order to be printed in a newspaper'.

Remedial Works is a two-person exhibition by artists Kara Chin and Harley Kuyck-Cohen at Quench Gallery, Margate. An installation of new sculptural works and video, Chin and Kuyck-Cohen have produced works invested in representing shifting notions of nature.
In its most basic form, ‘Remedial’ means to heal. In terms of architecture - remediation is the process of revisiting and repairing those poorly constructed buildings treated unkindly by the natural world.

LUNGLEY Gallery moves to Soho | London
It is with great excitement that I announce the gallery is moving to 175 Wardour St, Soho.
The inaugural exhibition titled 175 Wardour Street opens on Friday 4th June 2021 to coincide with the first London Gallery Weekend, and will feature work by gallery artists: Stuart Brisley, Brian Dawn Chalkley, Jack Killick, Kiarash Khazaei, Harley Kuyck-Cohen, Lana Locke and William Mackrell.
Special thanks to the Haggerston for hosting the gallery since 2018 and David Hoyland, Victoria Al-Din and the team at Seventeen for hosting us since Summer 2020.
